2. Find their story in God’s grand story of redemption

3. Share the story with other people.

To do this, we have looked at major ideas in every book of the Bible with an emphasis in seeing how major themes are developed that ultimately lead us to Christ. We see the seeds that were leaid in the OT grow and bloom in Christ. Today, we stand at the point in the story where those promises have been fulfilled in Christ, and are invited into this story of redemption through faith in Jesus.

We are not merely observers of this story—we are participants in it. The same gospel that was promised in the Old Testament and accomplished in Christ is now entrusted to us to believe, to live, and to proclaim.

As we consider the metanarrative of Scripture, we recognize that the Bible is not a collection of disconnected stories, but one unified account of God’s redemptive work from creation, fall, redemption, and restoration.

This is an invitation to know God, to be transformed by His grace, and to take our place in His mission. We press on to know God, to love Him more deeply, and to follow Him more faithfully. We must remember that the story is not finished yet. One day, Christ will return, and what has been promised will be fully realized. Until then, we live as those who know the end of the story.

Main idea: God judges His people’s sin, but promises to restore a faithful remnant through the coming Davidic Shepherd-King.

Theme 1: God’s Judgment on Covenant Unfaithfulness

• 1:2–7 — Judgment announced on Samaria for idolatry.

• 2:1–2 — Condemnation of land-grabbers and oppression.

• 3:1–3 — Leaders, prophets, and priests exploit the people; Jerusalem will fall.

Theme 2: True Covenant Faithfulness: Justice, Mercy, Humility

• 6:6–7 — Critique of empty sacrifices without heart obedience.

• 6:8 — Do justice, love kindness, walk humbly with your God.

Theme 3: The Hope of the Davidic Shepherd-King

• 2:12–13 — God Himself leads His remnant like a shepherd.

• 4:1–5 — Zion exalted; nations stream to God in peace.

• 4:6–8 — God restores the “lame” remnant and reigns as King.

• 5:2–5a — The ruler from Bethlehem, whose origins are “from ancient days,” shepherds and brings worldwide peace.

Final resolve of Micah:

• 7:7 — Though there is great injustice, Micah looks to YHWH for salvation

• 7:18–20 — God’s own covenant faithfulness motivates His people’s.

Nahum (comfort)

Main Idea: God will judge all evil as seen through the overthrow of Assyria

• (Nineveh is the capital of Assyria)

• Past actions don’t justify present rebellion (cf. Jonah)

• 1:1–6 – God appears to judge evil among the nations

• 1:7–8 – fate of faithful

• 1:12–15 – The end of evil is good news

Habakkuk

Main Idea: Prideful are humbled. Righteous live by faith.

1–2a – Complaints and responses

  • 1:2–4 – corruption in Judah

  • 1:5–11 – Look I am raising up the Babylonians

  • 1:12–2:1 – What! Babylon! They are even worse

  • 2:2–5 – righteous will live by faith – God will bring Babylon down

  • God may use corrupt kingdoms but doesn’t endorse them

  • All nations are accountable to gods justice

• 2b – five woes

  • 2 unjust gain

  • 3 slave labor

  • 4 irresponsible leaders

  • 5 idolatry

• 3 – Habakkuk’s prayer

  • 3:1-2 – pleads with God to bring justice now

  • 3:3–7 – God’s shows up in power to judge

  • 3:8–15 – a new future exodus

  • 3:16–19 – hopeful praise even if there is darkness (example of the righteous by faith)

Zephaniah (YHWH has hidden)

Main Idea: God will judge the nations like a consuming fire, but through judgment, there will be restoration

• 1–2:3 – Judgment on jerusalem

• 2:4–3:8 – Judgment on the nations & Jerusalem

• 3:9–20 – Hope for the nations & Jerusalem

  • 3:9-10 – purify the lips of the nations

  • 3:11-20 – restoration of Jerusalem

• Main point: YHWH will not tolerate spiritual harlotry

  • 1–3 Pain and divine love

  • 4–7 Threefold accusation and call to repent

• Hosea 1

  • Ambiguity is a tool that Hosea uses

• Hosea 3

• Hosea 6

  • No ambiguity. Need to return. YHWH has right to judge and will heal.

  • When you return to the Lord, he will be found.

  • Verse 6 is key to the book of Hosea

• Hosea 14

  • I will heal their apostasy

Joel

• Outline:

  • Destruction has come (1:1–14)

  • The day of YHWH (1:15–2:11)

  • Repent and respond (2:12–32)

  • The justice of the lord (3)

• Main point: YHWH’s grace and justice are imminent; it is up to us to respond.

• Key themes:

  • Day of the Lord – when the presence of the Lord brings judgment and/or deliverance and blessing — destruction for the nations, it can also be seen as a time of salvation for God’s people. The Lord remains a refuge in the chaos of judgment (3:15–16).

    • The day that YHWH will act

    • You see the day of the LORD coming and your reaction should be repentance

    • In spite of Israel’s disobedience, God will accomplish his purposes and will bless the nations.

Amos

• Main point: YHWH’s justice will not be withheld, so repent.

• Outline

  • Prophecies against various nations (1–2)

  • Discourses against Israel (3–6)

  • 5 symbolic visions of Israel and future hope (7–9)

• Identity of Amos: herdsman (indictment that a northern herdsman is indicting them)

• Brutal

  • Amos 4:1-3 – oppressing the poor → sin leads to tragic consequences

  • Amos 4:4-5 – the people love to rebel

• People who deceive themselves that they are following YHWH yet are struck with the striking reality

Obadiah

• Outline

  • The judgment of Edom (1–14)

  • The day of Yahweh (15–21)

• Main Idea: YHWH is sovereign and has the right to judge all nations

• Anti-YHWH and active in helping Northern Israel go down into foreign worship

Jonah

• Main point: YHWH has the right to work beyond Israel and to judge Israel

• Outline
